Towards Accessible Touchscreen Interfaces for Older Adults: Modeling and visualizing finger trajectoriesMany older adults encounter selection difficulties while interacting with handheld touchscreen devices (e.g., tablets, smartphones). Results from mouse trajectory sub-movement analysis with motor impaired users implied that similar analysis of finger trajectory of older adults may help understanding the reasons behind age-related target selection difficulties with touch interaction. One major obstacle for analyzing finger trajectories is that commercial touchscreen devices can
capture data when the finger is in contact with the screen, but not when the finger is in the air. This paper presents a novel finger trajectory modeling and visualization tool that can collect finger movement data from a motion-capturing device, integrate this data with touch interaction data from a touchscreen device, and then model the entire finger interaction from a selection task for sub-movement property analysis. This tool can be useful for analyzing touch interaction data from older adults to improve the accessibility of touchscreen devices. Effects of aging on small target selection with touch inputAge-related declines in physical and cognitive function can result in target selection difficulties that hinder device operation. Previous studies have detailed the different types of target selection errors encountered, as well as how they vary with age and with input device for mouse and pen interaction. We extend this work to describe the types of age-related selection errors encountered with small touch-screen devices. Consistent with prior results, we found that older adults had longer target selection times, generated higher error rates, and encountered a broader range of selection difficulties (e.g., miss errors, and slip errors) relative to a younger comparison group. However, in contrast to the patterns previously found with pen interaction, we found that miss error (i.e., both landing and lifting outside the target bounds) was a more common source of errors for older adults than slip error (i.e., landing on the target but slipping outside the target bounds before lifting). Moreover, aging influenced both miss and slip errors in our study of touch interaction, whereas for pen interaction, age has only been found to influence slip errors. These differences highlight the need to consider pen and touch interaction separately despite both being forms of direct input. Based on our findings, we discuss possible approaches for improving the accessibility of touch interaction for older adults. Performance Evaluation for Touch-Based Interaction of Older AdultsUnderstanding target acquisition tasks is particularly important for older adults aged 65 years and older, as some may find touch-‐based interfaces more challenging due to age-related declines in motor skills. This work aims to develop novel performance evaluation measures that can assess touch-based target selection difficulties of older adults. In addition, this study intends to explore real life unconstrained target selection tasks trajectories that are collected for a longer period of time to develop such performance evaluation measures. | Scientific Excellence - Advancing Knowledge | 2015-01-01 | Afroza Sultana |

Understanding Finger Trajectories for Accessible Touchscreen Interfaces for Older AdultsThis poster was presented in ACM Canadian Celebration of Women in Computing on 3 November 2017. McGill University | Scientific Excellence - Advancing Knowledge | 2017-11-03 | Afroza Sultana, Karyn Moffatt |
Understanding Touch-screen Interaction of Older AdultsAdults aged 65 years, and older, comprise one of the fastest growing populations in the world. Modern technologies like mobile applications for health monitoring, and social networking, can help older adults to carry on their activities, both independently and socially. However, many older adults cannot take the full advantage of these technologies because of age related physical and sensory declines. Although performance evaluation measures for target selection tasks have been extensively studied, little is known about the capabilities of older adults during unconstrained tasks on touch-screens. In addition, major performance evaluation models were developed from indirect input devices, which may not fully capture the complexities of three-dimensional touch-based interaction. This work aims to investigate the general traits of target selection behaviour of older adults on touch-screens. The findings will contribute to the design of accessible touch-based interfaces, including the digital storytelling environments we are designing in WP 4.3. | Scientific Excellence - Advancing Knowledge | 2016-10-20 | Afroza Sultana |

3-D Finger Trajectory Tracking, Modelling and Visualizing Tool for Accessible Touchscreen Interface for Older AdultsThe majority of older adults encounter difficulties to select targets, while interacting with touchscreen devices (e.g., tablets, smartphones). Finger trajectory analysis from touch interaction can help to understand the reasons behind such difficulties. One major obstacle is that commercial touchscreen devices can capture touch-interaction data when the finger is in contact with the screen, but not when the finger is in the air. To address this gap, we developed a novel finger trajectory tracking, modeling and visualizing tool that can collect finger-interaction data from a device that is equipped with motion sensors and cameras. Then, this data is integrated with the selection endpoint data collected from the touchscreen devices. The integrated data is then modeled to visualize the entire finger trajectory from touch-interaction for further analysis. This tool will be applied to improve the accessibility of older adults with any touchscreen devices.
